Top Ten Tuesday | Favourite Classics


Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature created at The Broke and the Bookish. Each week you compile a list of ten books which coincide with that week's theme. You can find out everything you need to know about joining in here!

This week's theme is 'Top Ten Favourite Classic Books'. So, without further ado, here are my favourite classics!

S. Eliot as ‘the first, the longest, and the best of modern English detective novels’, The Moonstone is a marvellously taut and intricate tale of mystery, in which facts and memory can prove treacherous and not everyone is as they first appear.

Based on Louise May Alcott's childhood, this lively portrait of nineteenth- century family life possesses a lasting vitality that has endeared it to generations of readers.

But when his money is stolen and an orphaned child finds her way into his house, Silas is given the chance to transform his life. His fate, and that of the little girl he adopts, is entwined with Godfrey Cass, son of the village Squire, who, like Silas, is trapped by his past. Silas Marner, George Eliot's favourite of her novels, combines humour, rich symbolism and pointed social criticism to create an unsentimental but affectionate portrait of rural life.

  1. So many of these were so close to making my list!! Little Women still makes me cry, but I think I may have liked Little Men so much more because Jo was so happy ;-) Loved Jekell and Hyde as well - if the list had been fifty I still would have had to turn names away!

    1. I still haven't read Little Men or Jo's Boys, I do own them both, though, so I should really get around to them soon!

  2. I love the cover to The Secret Garden. Mine is an old hardcover with a sleeve and not quite as interesting. I think one of my favorite classic text to teach is The Importance of Being Earnest (it didn't make my list because I forgot about it). So funny.

  3. I love the cover you've chosen for The Secret Garden! It's definitely one of my all time favourite books. I do have a soft spot for Macbeth too, I remember performing the witches' first scene in my Y9 English class!

    1. It's really pretty, isn't it? It's a Penguin Threads edition - the Penguin Threads Classics are really gorgeous. Ha, yeah I remember Macbeth in Y9 - I'm pretty sure we had to watch a really terrible film adaptation from the 70's or 80's or something. From what I can remember, Macbeth blinked after his head came off!

  4. SUCH a great list. Especially the Secret Garden. I grew up reading that book. I read Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for the first time a few years ago and was surprised how much I liked it, how easy it was to read. Loved it! :D Thanks so much for stopping by my blog!
