What's Up Wednesday! | 26/02/13

What's Up Wednesday is a weekly blog hop created by Jaime Morrow and Erin L. Funk as a way for writers and readers to share with one another what they get up to each week.

This week I thought I'd start joining in!

What I'm Reading

I'm nearing the end of Grave Mercy, the first book in Robin LaFevers' His Fair Assassin trilogy. I was a bit unsure of it at first, but now that I'm into it I'm loving it! Luckily for me I already own a copy of Dark Triumph so I can jump straight into that once I'm finished.

What I'm Writing

I'm still working away on Bloodroot and Bracken, my historical/paranormal novel. Right now I'm trying to write the scene in which the main character discovers her daughter's a witch and it's so difficult - turns out I'm rubbish at writing shock!

What Inspires Me Right Now

As it almost always does, music is the thing that keeps me inspired when I need to write, and I've found that Florence + the Machine is perfect to listen to when writing about witches. I can't stop listening to these three songs in particular.

What Else I've Been Up To

Mainly stressing about my future, which is never fun. I'm in my early 20's and in what could be my last year of education, and while the big, wide world is exciting and full of possibilities it's also absolutely terrifying!

But it's something of a comfort to know that the majority of my friends feel exactly the same way. I don't think anyone really has their life on track when they're 22 - there's no fun in knowing exactly where you're headed, in fact I think now is the ideal time for the wise words of J. R. R. Tolkien: "It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to."

And now I'm going to make myself a delicious bowl of macaroni cheese and head to the library to get some work done!

  1. I loved both of those books by Robin LaFevers and hope there's a third one on the way...
I'm almost jealous of you not knowing where your future is headed. What an exciting time! (And now I feel old.)

    1. There is! :) There's a third book called Mortal Heart which I believe is being released in November.

Haha, you're only as old as you feel! ;) There is some excitement in not knowing what my life's going to be like this time next year, but it's still pretty frightening!

  3. Mac and Cheese - Yum!!!

I like some of Florence + the Machine. They aren't to bad. And i totally understand about stressing about your future. I still do that, especially around my birthday.

    Have a great week.

    1. You can never go wrong with macaroni cheese - it is the future.

Birthdays are always the ideal time to start stressing, I think. After your 21st they start to feel less and less like celebrations. :P

      Thank you, and you!

  4. Yay, welcome to What's Up Wednesday, Jess! :)

I need to read Grave Mercy! Just the concept of assassin nuns made me add it to my list ages ago, but the reading pile is never-ending!

Yep, I think everyone our age is in the same position. Things have been busy since graduation but I still have no idea where life is heading - but I guess that's all part of the fun!

    1. Thanks! :)

I feel your pain, my TBR pile is huuuuuge. Grave Mercy's a really good read though; it's one of those books you just fly through.

It's good you've been busy! :) I have no idea what I'm going to be doing this time next year. I have a few things I'm mulling over, but nothing definite just yet.

  5. You're right, Jess. The world is full of possibility and risk. The thing to grab hold of early on is your passion. What do you want to do with your life? When someone asks what you do with your time, what do you want to be able to say? If you can put your finger on that, work toward that end. People go through years of education, move from job to job, just getting by without really doing what brings them joy. Don't be that way. Find your joy now, and pursue it! There'll still be risk and uncertainty, but at least you'll know it's worth it. :)

All the best with your writing this week, Jess! May you discover the perfect way to show shock. :)

    1. I find my main problem is that I like too much! I'm interested in too much stuff - I'll just have to be a Renaissance woman and do a little bit of everything. :P

Thank you, I hope I do!

  6. Yes! Do a little bit of everything! You may feel unfocused at times, but most days, you'll be having so much fun, you won't have time to bother yourself with that. I found amazing contentment with just being independent in my early 20s. Yes, there wasn't much money, and taking care of everything for yourself can be a drag, but I was finally the only one in charge of me, and that made the extra work and worry totally worth it.

    1. I think that's pretty much what your 20s are for; they're a chance to 'find yourself', for lack of a better phrase. :)

  7. Hey there! Nice to meet you. Yes, it's a great feeling to know that you already own the next book in the series following the one you've fallen in love with, hmm? :) Great Tolkien quote.

And good on you for plugging away with something you have a hard time conveying in your writing. Do you think it's because you can't get 'into the moment' of the shock because you knew that the revelation was coming? Maybe it would help to try and explore a moment in your life when you felt shock--or pay attention the next time you get really surprised by something. Just random suggestions.

    1. Nice to meet you, too! Yeah, it's always nice to know you can continue with a series straight away. :)

Honestly I think the main reason I struggled with it is because the shock is a reaction to something I will never experience. I have no idea how I'd react if I was a mother whose daughter suddenly revealed that she could do magic! I finally managed to write the scene in the end, so now I just need to edit it. :)
